HOW DEEP SHOULD SOIL BE FOR LANDSCAPING SOD?
MVQS recommends the industry standard, minimum 4 inches of MVQS Topsoil for a care-free lawn on sites where the sub-base has a soil like tendency. For optimum deep rooting plant penetration and the benefits it brings, and in cases where the sub-base is rock-like fill, we recomend the now accepted standard topsoil depth of 6 inches.
HOW TO MEASURE AND CALCULATING THE CUBIC YARDS
OF TOPSOIL YOU NEED FOR YOUR PROJECT?

The number of cubic yards is equal to the square footage to cover multiplied by the inches deep of topsoil over twelve. Divide this multiplication by 27 to get the total number of cubic yards your project requires.
Utilize our on-line calculator to determine the total cubic yards of topsoil required for your project.
| Example:
As a basic guide, 3,500 ft² of lawn will require 45 cubic yds or 3 tandems of soil for a 4 inch base |
BULK DENSITY
A cubic yard is usually less than one tonne. Weight varies depending upon moisture content and degree of compaction and the amount of organic matter.

Fact: Topsoil is the base for healthy plants.
And turfgrass nursery sod needs just four things to grow: Sunlight, Air, Water and Nutrients
If the topsoil selected as the base for your lawn is not ideal for growing grass the plant will suffer, and the end result of your landscape sod investment, unsatisfactory.
As a grower and supplier of Quality Nursery Sod for over 30 years, Musquodoboit Valley Quality Sod (MVQS) is familiar with the grass plant “sod” needs for optimum success.

PHYSICAL STRUCTURE OF MVQS TOPSOIL
Sandy Loam Soil Texture

Sand 60 %
Silt 35 %
Clay 5%
A sandy-loam soil texture is excellent for root development, moisture retention, resists compaction and is easy to work with no stones.
Organic Matter Additives
10 % MSW Compost added to your soil Helps balance the pH of your topsoil (significant for healthy grass growth)
The Importance of Nutrient Balance
Our Topsoil pH balance is at 6.2 to 6.5 A pH range between 6.0 and 7.0 assures optimum nutrient uptake. Magnesium, calcium and other micro-nutrients are available from dolomitic limestone
Grass plants perform best in fertile, non-acid reacting soil with good drainage. We recommend ‘Turf Starter’ fertilizer be spread evenly 10 lbs per 1, 000 ft² over the soil prior to installing the sod. (N-P-K turf starters e.g. 12-30-10, 50% SCU )
Nitrogen (N)
Nitrogen promotes plant growth and is normally seen through leaf growth and lush green colour. Nitrogen leaches through the soil and should only be added using slow release fertilizers and/or organic type nutrients
Phosphorus (P)
Phosphorus is the nutrient that provides for plant root development, flower and fruit production. Phosphorus moves very little through soil and achieves optimum results when spread on soil before planting or sodding
Potash (K)
Potash is needed by plants for hardy cell tissue development. Hardy cell structure means more drought tolerance, winter hardiness and traffic tolerant plant material and turf.
